Chris Hani Crèche
Within the municipality of Witzenberg in the Cape Prvince, South Africa, lies the picturesque town of Tulbagh. In a township within the community about 1000 people live in corrugated iron and cardboard shacks.
Currently between 10 and 30 pre-school children attend a day-care centre in a small building of about 5 x 7 metres. They are being looked after by mothers who have hardly any training or education themselves. This currently constitutes the Chris Hani crèche.
Safety and hygiene are of a very low standard. In 2002 The Town Council of Essen and the Town Council of Witzenberg forged an agreement under which Essen supports Witzenberg in the fields of Youth and Education. One of the main projects at present is to rebuild the Chris Hani crèche and to rturn it into a fully-fledged "Early Childhood Centre".
This means combining a pre-school centre with a day-care facilities. Essen also supports the education and training of personnel and volunteers, the building of a safe play area and the building of a community centre in the township. With our Textile event "Colours of Africa" we hope to raise a significant sum of money to aid these projects. Every Euro we manage to raise with our auction of your textile work, will be equalled by the Town Council of Essen!
